How to install an anchor point on a tiled roof without removing the tiles

Installing an anchor point on a tiled roof has traditionally been one of the most awkward jobs for solar panel installers, aerial fitters and maintenance companies: you had to lift tiles, find the structure, anchor and close the roof again without compromising its watertightness. Tecton Safety's SDT-100 base solves the problem by fixing the anchor directly to the concrete slab through the tiles, without removing them.

How the SDT-100 base works

The SDT-100 is a triangular plate of 3 mm AISI 304 2B stainless steel (390 × 370 mm, 2.04 kg) with three fixing slots and a central hole for the PA-10 or PAD-20 anchor point. The slots accept tile spacings from 200 to 320 mm, so the base rests on the crests of the tiles and the three anchors go through the roof covering into the concrete slab. The assembly is rated for a breaking load above 15 kN and up to 3 users with the PA-10 anchor.

What you need

  • SDT-100 base and PA-10 or PAD-20 anchor point with its M12 × 25 A2-70 hex bolt.
  • 3 M12 chemical anchors with deep mesh sleeves and enough threaded rod to go through tile, cavity and at least 120 mm of slab.
  • Core or suitable drill bit for tile and concrete, blower and brush to clean the holes.
  • Torque wrench and pull-out tester for the final check.

Step-by-step procedure

  1. Setting out. Place the base on the tiles so that the three slots sit on the crests and the central hole is over sound slab. Mark the three drilling points.
  2. Drilling. Drill through the tile and the cavity until you reach the slab and go at least 120 mm into it. Clean each hole thoroughly: the performance of the chemical anchor depends on it.
  3. Chemical anchors. Insert the mesh sleeve, inject the resin as per the manufacturer's instructions and place the rods. Respect the curing time before loading.
  4. Fitting the anchor. Fix the PA-10 or PAD-20 to the base with the M12 × 25 bolt (PA-10: 35 Nm; PAD-20 with lock nut: 20 Nm).
  5. Placing the assembly. Offer the base up onto the rods, leaving 20-40 mm of thread above the tiles, and tighten the nuts to the torque recommended by the anchor manufacturer.
  6. Verification. Check that the strength of the assembly exceeds 15 kN with a pull-out test and go through every control point on the instruction sheet before putting the anchor into service.

Advantages over the traditional method

  • No tiles are lifted and the roof's waterproofing is untouched.
  • The fixing is made into the slab, not into the timber or steel roof structure, with verifiable strength.
  • Installed in under an hour per point, with everyday site tools.
  • Compatible with the PA-10 (3 users) and PAD-20 (energy absorbing) anchors.

Who it is for

Installers of photovoltaic panels on detached houses, roof maintenance companies, aerial fitters and homeowners' associations that need permanent anchor points to access the roof safely. It is a system made in Spain and, to date, without an equivalent on the market.
